A general search for the term Alkebulan brings up multiple websites for organizations in Africa such as investment groups for African nations. This supports the claim that there's a general movement in the continent in question to reinstate usage of their term for their continent.

I don't agree with her conspiracy theory framing of intentionally oppressive goals in the history of the term Africa. She says it originates with the Roman Empire defeating Carthage and salting the ground there and referred to this one location and gradually came to refer to the entire continent.
Historically in Europe, all royalty got localized names. William the Conqueror’s original name was Guillaume de Normandie in French, and in Latin he was called Willelmus. Latin was a somewhat universal language for Europe for a lot years and things were frequently latinized to help with communication with learned men of other nations who probably spoke Latin even if they didn't speak your language.
He was a Duke of Normandy which is part of France and his actual name was Guillaume or William in French. Guillaume de Normandie is William of Normandy in French.
So he was a French speaking Frenchman who became a British king and gets written about routinely under his anglicized name. But also there's an injection of French language into the English language because of this period where French speaking French born nobility had power in England and the official language of the British Court was French because it was their native tongue.
So they were more fluent in French than in English and conducted all official business in their native language while ruling England.
There were no cell phones or Internet connections. Large numbers of people were illiterate. Maps tended to not be geographically accurate because there were no satellites blah blah blah.
So typically you had things like a detailed map of England and a little drawing in the corner labeled "France."
There's probably no conspiracy to oppress the continent in question by calling it Africa. That's just what people in Europe understood it as and gradually called the entire continent by it organically as their understanding grew that there's more land down here than the northern coast of this continent in the Mediterranean.
I also looked up her claim that Rome salted the earth at Carthage. She's got a lot of heavy-handed subtext about those hateful rat bastards.
This piece says it's not a credible claim. I tried to reconcile her statements with my understanding of history which somewhat frequently is out of step with what the Internet says these days.
I remember Carthage as being the people with war elephants. What I heard is that Rome destroyed a group of religious nutcases worshiping an evil god called Baal and engaging in child sacrifice and burned it to the ground and salted the earth.
I had no recollection of these two stories being connected, but this may have been Carthage:
Baal Hammon was known as the Chief of the pantheon of Carthage and the deity that made vegetation grow; as with most deities of Carthage, he was seemingly propitiated with child sacrifice, likely in times of strife or crisis, or only by elites, perhaps for the good of the whole community. This practice was recorded by Greeks and Romans, but dismissed as propaganda by modern scholars, until archeologists unearthed urns containing the cremated remains of infants in places of ritual sacrifice. Some scholars believe this confirms the accounts of child sacrifice, while others insist these are the remains of children who died young.
Whatever did or did not REALLY happen between Rome and Carthage over 2000 years ago, can we lighten up on assumptions this is racist White Supremacist bullshit related to the current political climate?
Anyway, I have a site called Eclogiselle and after doing the research and making notes for this piece but prior to actually writing it, I changed the label there from Africa to Alkebulan.
Because if that information is being used by people in rural parts of that continent, that's probably the word they actually use. So if that label is intended to help locals on the ground, it should be THEIR word for their place.
Will I promptly embrace calling it Alkebulan in all instances of my writing? Probably not.
It's a new word for me and I have trouble spelling it and pronouncing it and I'm an American woman who presumably has a mostly English-speaking Western audience who wouldn't likely know the word and would view my use of it as weird and problematic and not good communication.
