Schindler

From a Wikipedia article about the factory owned by Oskar Schindler, the subject of the film Schindler's List:

..Oskar Schindler ... was a member of the Nazi Party and an agent of the Abwehr...he took over the German kitchenware shop on ul. Krakowska, and ... the receivership of the "Rekord" company in Zabłocie. He also produced ammunition shells, so that his factory would be classed as an essential part of the war effort. 

He is remembered as a humanitarian who saved the lives of 1200 Jews during the Holocaust. But prior to World War II, he was a member of the Nazi party and a spy for them.

From what I gather, his factory made munitions -- supported by the quote above -- and he would say things like "I can't give you the children. I need their small fingers to make munitions for you."

So he was employing child labor, among other things, and stuff like that gets glossed over as we talk about him as a humanitarian saving Jews. My understanding is he was a more reliable munitions supplier than many supplying the Nazis because they all used Jews as slave labor but he fed his Jews.

He was a rascal who was unfaithful to his wife, so when he brought food to a young Jewish woman, the Nazis winked and let him through, assuming him to be treating her as a cheap whore, bought for the price of a meal. My understanding is she was still alive when they began telling his story and she claimed he never touched her, but the belief that he was a rascal merely using her sexually is why he was able to feed her.

Wikipedia verifies that he went through his entire fortune bribing Nazis and feeding his people. It indicates he and his wife are both remembered as humanitarians, but I have heard his wife resented it that he spent all their money on this and they lived in relative poverty in Argentina following the war.

It seems likely to me that had he not saved 1200 Jews, instead of living in Argentina and struggling financially, he could have been part of the Nuremberg trials or otherwise treated far worse than just no longer being wealthy.

Women who "collaborated" with the Nazis were sometimes stripped to the waist, got their heads shaved and were beaten by a rabid crowd. Twelve people in the Nuremberg trials were sentenced to death.

Hitler was not part of the Nuremberg trials. He supposedly committed suicide and had his body burned to prevent it from being publicly abused after his death as happened to someone else before his decision to commit suicide.

My understanding is there was never a positive ID of his body, so it fueled rumors he escaped and was still alive somewhere.

I don't know for certain what a typical post war outcome was for most members of the Nazi party, but I have long speculated Schindler bought his own future when he bought a future for 1200 Jews at the cost of his entire personal fortune.

A lot of Jewish families were unable to collect on life insurance policies or retrieve valuables from the "neutral" Swiss because concentration camps didn't issue death certificates for their victims, so they couldn't prove their relative was dead and they were the rightful heir.

A lot of people were destroyed financially by this global conflict which followed on the heels of a global Great Depression. And millions died during the war and millions more were permanently maimed by it.

But supposedly the wife of Oskar Schindler spent her final days bitching about how Oskar ruined them financially to help a bunch of Jews rather than comparing their fate to people in the Nuremberg trials or otherwise not exactly being loved by the world for having been members of the Nazi party.
